THE Federal Ministry of Health yesterday said the fake doctor paraded by the police on Tuesday was recruited by the Federal Civil Service Commission and posted to the ministry. The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Linus Awute, told newsmen in Abuja yesterday that the ministry would demand a refund of the salaries and allowances paid the ‘doctor’ in the past nine years. According to him: “It is important to place it on record that the Federal Ministry of Health does not employ any of its members of staff directly. “He was recruited through the Federal Civil Service Commission which has the statutory powers to do so and then deploys such employed civil servants to any ministry, department or agency according to their discipline and relevance.” Source: Guardian 

A CONGOLESE, Kutumisana Mbuta Blaise has been convicted for smuggling the sum of $511, 225 and he is to forfeit the cash to the Federal Government. The convict, a national of Democratic Republic of Congo was found guilty of money laundering by Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos. According to a statement from the EFCC, Blaise was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on one count charge of money laundering sequel to his arrest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for being in possession of $511,225 cash, which he failed to declare to the officers and men of the Nigerian Customs Service as required by the provisions of Section 2(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012). Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has been offered a two-year contract to join Manchester United, according to German daily Bild on Friday. United’s attempt to lure the 30-year-old from Bayern Munich, after 17 years with the Bavarian giants, looks to be getting serious. After a little respite, kidnapping reared its head again in Ekiti State with the abduction of an 80-year-old woman, Mrs. Rose Aina in Ilogbo-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area. Madam Aina was said to have been kidnapped at about 9.00 pm on Tuesday and her whereabouts remain unknown till the time of filing this report. Her kidnap has thrown the community into confusion and panic as residents now live in fear following the incident. Daily Sun gathered yesterday that efforts made to raise search teams to comb adjoining forest in the community and other neighbouring towns have not yielded any result. The octogenarian was said to be sleeping in her room when the kidnappers allegedly swooped on her and took her to an unknown destination. Checks by Daily Sun revealed that the entire Ilogbo  community is concerned about the strange development. Two kid suicide bombers, between ages nine and 11, have been apprehended and handed over to the Nigeria Police in Yola for attempting to detonate a bomb allegedly given to them by an adult. They were arrested while attempting to sell the improvised bomb said to have been handed over to them with a sum of N2,500 by an unidentified person. The kid bombers had attempted to sell the item to somebody, who buys and sells scraps but the supposed buyer declined on the grounds that he needed large quantities. However, shortly after leaving the vicinity the improvised bomb exploded injuring one of the suicide bombers. The incident, which occurred opposite Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office along Numan Road in Yola, attracted a large number of the officials, who alerted their bosses. A Queens teen who was upset over a break-up used an M16 assault rifle to kill himself on a public beach, sources told The Post on Thursday. Huiyuan Wang, 17, left a handwritten suicide note Sunday night that mentioned his ex-girlfriend — and his original plan to kill others with two 30-round clips found in his backpack. Police are investigating how the Flushing teen got the semiautomatic weapon. Wang’s mother became worried on Sunday and unsuccessfully tried to track him with the iPhone locator. At about 8 p.m., he approached two people at Breezy Point, asking to use their phone while bleeding. He walked off and shot himself behind a bathroom at Beach 193rd Street. A worker in his building described Wang as “quiet, educated and well-mannered,” noting, “The kid doesn’t even curse.”

No fewer than 11 persons were yesterday evening feared dead, while eight persons sustained serious injuries in an auto crash along Ile-Ife/Ondo road. A police source said reckless driving and over speeding by drivers of the vehicles caused the accident. It was gathered that one of the tyres of the car burst and the driver lost control after which it collided with a commercial bus from the opposite direction and immediately the two vehicles went up in flame. The accident, which occurred few kilometres to Ifetedo, the boundary of Osun and Ondo states, it was gathered, affected free flow of traffic on the busy road for several hours. A police source hinted that eight of the passengers in the bus, including a toddler, sustained serious injuries, while 11 others were feared dead. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] yesterday failed in its bid to arraign former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva on a fresh 50-count corruption charges instituted against him before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Sylva is being charged alongside three others, including Francis Okokuro, Gbenga Balogun and Samuel Ogbuku for allegedly using three companies, Marlin Maritime Limited, Eat Catering Services Limited, and Haloween-Blue Construction and Logistics Limited to steal N19.2 billion from the state government during his administration. The fraud, according to the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2012, under the pretence that they were being used to augment salaries of the government workers. Justice Ahmed Mohammed of another Federal High Court had earlier dismissed one of two fraud cases instituted by the anti-graft agency against Sylva on the grounds that it was an abuse of court process. KANO—A Federal High Court, sitting in Kano, yesterday, ordered former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, and his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, accused of fraud, remanded in prison custody in Kano till September 28. The former governor is facing a 28-count charge alongside his two sons, and one Wada Abubakar in connection with alleged corruption and money laundering that amounted to over N1.35 billion. Lamido who was arraigned for receiving N1.35 billion kickback from a government contractor was shocked and could not believe his ears after the judge turned down his bail application and ordered him remanded.
